Food for the Future with Empowered Female Smallholders?
Would female farmers increase their their yields by 20-30 per cent if they had the same access to productive resources as men?
In African countries, women play a critical role in agriculture. Female smallholders produce 60-80 per cent of the food consumed locally. However, women continue to have poor access to and control over the means of agricultural production, including agricultural inputs, improved technologies, extension services, credit and land.
FAO claims that if women had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase their yields by 20-30 per cent. What are the challenges and what are the solutions? How to empower women smallholder farmers?
