Investing in employment for young women is an investment in less hunger. Why don't we do more?

At the occasion of the International Day of the Girl, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), KPMG and Plan International Norway invite you to the launch of the report "Rural Job Creation and Economic Empowerment for Young Women: An exploratory qualitative study of rural communities in Ethiopia, Malawi and Nepal". The study presents findings about a demographic group which represent too little a proportion of both research and investments, despite the fact that rural women make up 25 per cent of the world's population (International Labour Organisation). If women in rural areas had the same access to resources as men, for example bank accounts, credit, seeds, livestock, agricultural technology and ownership of arable land, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that their agricultural production could increase by 20-30% and the number of hungry people could be reduced by 100-150 million.
The report gives us an opportunity to address a key priority of the Norwegian government, i.e. employment within food production and self-sufficiency as initiatives to create a world free of hunger and increase development. A diverse panel will discuss how we can best support rural women in getting a decent job and remain employed.
Why is it still the case that girls and women in rural areas do not have the opportunities that enable them to contribute to development - for themselves and the communities they are a part of? Why don't we invest in girls and women?
